Eight Off FAQ
Eight Off Solitaire FAQ
Answers to common questions about Eight Off Solitaire.
What makes Eight Off different from FreeCell?
Eight Off gives you 8 reserve cells (4 pre-filled) versus FreeCell's 4 empty cells. The main difference: Eight Off requires building tableau piles by the same suit only, and you can only move one card at a time (no sequences). This makes it a completely different puzzle.
Why does Eight Off start with cards in the free cells?
The game deals 6 cards to each of the 8 tableau columns (48 cards), then places the first 4 cards from the deck into the free cells. This gives you a head start on organizing your tableau!
What does 'building by same suit' mean?
In Eight Off, cards in the tableau must be stacked so each card is one rank lower AND the same suit as the card below it. For example, a 6 of hearts can only go on a 7 of hearts.
How many cards can I move at once?
Eight Off only moves one card at a time (unlike FreeCell which moves sequences). With N empty reserve cells, you can move up to N+1 cards in a chain by using the cells as temporary holding spots. With 4 empty cells, you can move a chain of up to 5 cards.
Can I move cards between reserve cells?
Yes! You can move cards between the 8 reserve cells freely. You can also move cards from reserve cells to the tableau or foundations. This flexibility is key to maneuvering cards into position.
What cards can go in empty tableau columns?
Only Kings can be placed in empty tableau columns. Since you must build down by same suit, and King is the highest card, nothing can go on a King except another King.
Is Eight Off harder or easier than FreeCell?
Eight Off plays differently than FreeCell. While you have more reserve cells (8 vs 4), the same-suit restriction and single-card moves make it a unique challenge. Whether it's harder depends on your strategy skills!
How do I win at Eight Off?
Move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, building each from Ace to King by suit. Use the reserve cells strategically to temporarily hold cards while you build same-suit sequences in the tableau.
